MidpSSH | SSH and Telnet client for Mobile Devices

On some devices (phones) there are Internet profile settings for Java applications to use. The Internet profile used must be for Internet access rather than for WAP access. This is often a different APN that is already configured in your device or you may have to obtain from your provider.

The wrong APN / settings are probably the ones that you use to browse WAP and HTML sites. They often go through an APN that filters your traffic.

A new Internet profile may need to be created and linked to the Internet account (as the default profile uses the WAP account). Create a new profile rather than editing the existing so as not to break other applications. You must assign this in the “Settings for Java”.

Data compression and header compression seem to make no difference to the size of session initialisation (1704 sent / 3418 received).

The following instructions are for the Nokia 6230 but may apply to other Nokia phones.

In Services/Settings/Connection Settings you can create a new connection setting. Choose Active Connection Settings, find an empty one and then choose Edit Active Service Settings. Disable proxies and under Bearer Settings set up the GPRS access point. Finally choose the original WAP settings to retain those settings for regular services. In the applications menu you can choose the connection settings for each application by choosing Options/Connect Via/Internet.

It is confirmed (using Nokia 6230i), that working WAP connection doesn’t guarantee GPRS connection to Internet for Java apps. Check your ‘data transfer’ settings for your number in your telco. If it is correct and still doesn’t work, order SMS with GPRS-Internet configuration from telco, even, if you are sure that everything is already in place.

The Samsung SGH-F700 does not yet support MidpSSH.
